Computer School Opens at Square Nine

Business New Haven
3/6/2000
By: BNH

NEW HAVEN - The Millennium Institute of Computers has opened at One Church Street, occupying space that has been vacant for more than five years. The school, with nine locations in the Northeast, China and Canada, has moved its corporate headquarters to New Haven from New York, where one of the company's schools is located. A minority-owned company, it is headed by director Edward S. Tucker.

“We looked at Hartford and Darien as possible locations for the new school,” Tucker explains. “The choice of New Haven was based on the way the market can work. The accessibility of I-95 and I-91 just blocks from the school was a major consideration. The radio market is also centrally located for us. So New Haven becomes a nice hub city where we can reach anyone who can travel up and the highways and by bus or train. “We see a future for growth, so we're making an investment in New Haven.”

Established to offer practical learning and training to individuals, small businesses and corporations, the Millennium Institute offers computer courses in a broad range, appropriate for those who have never turned on a computer to the most advanced, sophisticated users. Job-placement assistance is also available.

“A large percentage of our students are minorities attending daytime classes, looking to better their positions, says Tucker. “We offer a low-cost fast track to certification.”

A Prometric Testing Center, the school can test the level of knowledge of students and issue certification in-house. Courses cover everything from fundamental PC use to i-Net certification, networking and certification to Microsoft certified systems engineer. “Oracle is one of our best classes, and the only one [offered] in the state to our knowledge,” says Tucker.

Millennium also performs corporate consulting, providing analysis of corporate and individual end-user's needs, networking supplies and equipment, cable installers, Web server setup and Web page design, network tune-ups and other products and services for corporate clients.

The New Haven location has been completely renovated and includes eight classrooms. Equipment includes 140 computers and equipment such as Pro processors, printers, scanners and high-resolution projectors. The school offers day and evening classes daily. The school plans an official grand open March 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
