A New Break (Time)

MILFORD - Carolina Sandwich Company has opened at 315 New Haven Avenue. Owned by Michael Dibenedetto, the shop is famous for its hot sandwiches. Since buying out the former Break Time Deli & Grill, Dibenedetto has changed the menu, adding a number of new specialties. The shop is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.. For further information call 203-876-0631.

Goh the Distance

ORANGE - The Wellness 2000 Health Center has opened at 518 Boston Post Road. The facility is owned by K.C. Goh, a sports-medicine physician and graduate of the University of New South Wales, Australia.

A marathoner, Goh goes through the grind of staying in shape himself. The fitness center serves athletes in training, also catering to the 40-and-over population. The facility concentrates on preventing injuries and teaching clients to work out properly. Heart rates are monitored via a computer and clients receive a printout. If you aren't sure what kind of shape you're in, the center offers a two-kilometer walk test to check your fitness level. The author of numerous publications on sports medicine, Goh was in private practice as a solo practitioner prior to opening the Wellness Center several weeks ago. The facility is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For particulars call 203-795-3788.

SHELTON - Marks of Design, Goldsmith, has opened at 500D Howe Avenue. It is owned by Kathleen and Christopher Marks, the former a jewelry designer with 15 years of experience. The store carries Kathleen's designs as well as other jewelry. Custom design work is also available. The shop is a full service jewelry store which provides watch repair and battery replacement. If diamonds are your thing, the shop will help you pick it out and give you a lesson on the different grades. The shop is open 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily except Sunday and, Thursdays until 7:30 p.m. or by appointment. It can be reached at 203-924-0030.

Side Street to Main Street

MIDDLETOWN - The Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce kicks off its "Side Street to Main Street" program February 10. Taught by facilitators Bruce Lawson and Jim Jackson from the Essex Group, participants receive Fortune 500-type training and information. Focusing on targeting customers, building business plans and developing sales and managerial capabilities, the program provides those with no formal business training a blueprint for what it takes to succeed.

"Side Street to Main Street" is intended as a resource for minority small-business owners seeking to expand their exisiting business, or for anyone striving to start a new business. The forum is sponsored by Aetna, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Essex Group. Compliments of a grant from Aetna, 15 participants will take the ten-week program at no cost to them. Social Studies Educators Coming To Elm City

NEW HAVEN - Yale University and News Haven will play host to 2,500 teachers and school administrators from throughout the Northeast when the 31st annual Northeast Regional Conference for the Social Studies convenes here March 8-10. This is the first time that Yale has hosted the event, which will feature workshops, lectures and small group conversations aimed at enhancing the method of teaching and content of social-studies curricula. Representatives of major publishers, suppliers and distributors of educational materials will also attend the conference, as well as representatives of educational programs from the major New England museums and service programs for educators. The conference will be centered at the Omni New Haven hotel.

Business Is Looking Up

HARTFORD - The Recording Division of the Secretary of the State's office reported that 2,197 new businesses were registered in December. Of those, 1,511 are limited liability companies. Connecticut companies totaled 1,850 for the month, while 347 are from out of state. The total represents a nine-percent increase from December 1998, with 1,989 new businesses recorded.

Chamber To Hold Tag Sale

CLINTON - The Clinton Chamber of Commerce will hold a tag sale on March 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the cafeteria of the Morgan School, Route 81. Donations - collectible items, bric-a-brac, toys, tools, jewelry, books and other items - are more than welcome, as well as small pieces of furniture. Limited vendor space is available for a non-refundable fee of $25. For pickup and rental space arrangements call the chamber at 860-669-3889.

People's Banks on East Haven

EAST HAVEN - People's Bank recently opened its newest office at 10 Frontage Road. This is the second of a 30-branch expansion plan announced in September, which will be a mix of traditional and supermarket branches. An additional East Haven branch is located at the Trolley Square Stop & Shop. The new branch will be open daily except Sunday. Branch manger Miriam James will celebrate the opening with a photo contest, inviting residents to submit photos that capture the spirit of East Haven. Entries will be displayed in the branch and the winning photos will be posted on the bank's Web site.
