ROCKY HILL - Ames Department Stores Inc. (NASDAQ: AMES) announced a 60.9-percent increase in 52-week net sales for the fiscal year ended January 29 to $3.481 billion, compared to net sales of $2.387 billion for the same period a year ago. Comparable store sales (based on 284 stores) of $2.409 billion for the 52-week period ended January 29 represented a 6.2-percent increase over comparable store sales of $2.269 billion for the 52 week period ended January 30, 1999.
In a separate announcement, Ames reported its $7.6 million purchase of seven Chicago area Goldblatt's Department Stores. The company expects to re-open those stores under the Ames name in September.
