The Quinnipiac College School of Business has been awarded a $60,000 grant to establish a new program that expose high-school students to entrepreneurial opportunities.
The Kansas City-Mo.-based Kauffman Foundation, established by the late Ewing Kauffman (founder of Marion Laboratories and original owner of the Kansas City Royals baseball club), will award a grant to establish EntrePrep, a new program which will expose 24 New Haven high-schoolers to the world of entrepreneurship. Quinnipiac is on eof only two schools in the U.S. to receive a Kauffman grant for this purpose.
EntrePrep has four components:
An orientation, during which students meet program mentors and learn to recognize opportunities;
An intensive week-long summer institute at QC intended to teach students about entrepreneurship;
A 150-hour internship at an entrepreneurial business during the student's senior year;
Booster workshops to strengthen entrepreneurial skills and provide students with opportunities to learn from successful entrepreneurs.
Students who successfully complete the program will earn a $1,000 college scholarship as well.
Quinnipiac College is committed to and active in the community economic-development efforts in the greater New Haven area, and has been particularly involved in assisting small business and entrepreneurship development, says Mark Thompson, associate dean of the QC business school. The EntrePrep program is another example of Quinnipiac's deep involvement in the New Haven business community.
Participating students will be selected based on recommendations from officials at the four New Haven high schools. Nominated students will be interviewed by Thompson and Ron McMullen, an associate professor of management at the college.
More information about the EntrePrep program can be had by calling 203-281-8914.
