| SNET has begun rolling out its digital subscriber line (DSL) service in nine communities statewide. DSL technology allows users to access the Internet or corporate networks at speeds up to 200 times that of traditional analog modems. First to receive the SNET offering are Bridgeport, Bristol, Danbury, Meriden, New Haven, Norwich, Stamford, Stratford and Waterbury. However, not all customers in those communities will qualify for the service: To do so, they must live within about three miles of a DSL-equipped central office and have a phone line capable of carrying the DSL signal. SNET says its DSL service will be available to an additional ten municipalities by the end of March. Service begins at $129 a month, plus a one-time installation and equipment charge of $198.
