The relentlessly expanding Subway chain has become the first U.S. fast-food franchise to open a restaurant in (drum roll, please) Tanzania - and indeed the first in East Africa. The eatery is in Dar es Salaam, across the street from the Dar es Salaam Sheraton. U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania Charles R. Stith attended the grand opening, and assisted the Milford-based Subway chain with site suggestions and local publicity. Founded in Bridgeport in 1965 by Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck, M.D. thanks to a $1,000 loan from the latter to the former, Subway now has more than 14,000 restaurants in 75 countries, placing it second only to McDonald's in the fast-food pantheon.
