Following years of fits and starts, the long-dark Stratford Festival Theater (SFT) says it will announce a full 2000-01 season of plays and musicals by the end of this month. SFT has signed the papers on a People's Bank loan of $1.5 million, which will be used for renovations to the facility as well as to develop repertory for the coming season. Built in the 1950s, the theater in its heyday made Stratford a center for Shakespearean productions, but closed its doors in 1989 and fell under state control. Louis Burke and Brickhill-Burke Productions Inc. was chosen in 1995 to reopen the theater, and has spent the intervening years seeking private and public funding to get the project off ground zero. Now, at long last, it may be moving.
