WATERBURY - The Greater Waterbury Chamber of Commerce recently held its third annual Harold Webster Smith Awards event in honor of small business success and ingenuity. The awards program, created by the chamber's Small Business Council, is held in honor of Harold Webster Smith, founder of Webster Bank. Award recipients this year included Web-worx, LLC, entrepreneur of the year; G&R Manufacturing, manufacturer of the year; and M.J. Barlow Career & Staffing Services Inc., small business of the year.
Web-worx LLC, headquartered in Prospect, is owned and operated by Tom Peterson, Joe Gugliotti and Donna Palomba. The three created an Internet marketing and Web hosting company which increased sales 100 percent over the previous year. With 36 employees, a 25-percent increase over the previous year, the company's focus is marketing.
Located in Waterbury, M.J. Barlow Career & Staffing Services is owned and operated by Mary Jane Barlow. It helps fill staffing needs for more than 240 companies and has placed more than 200 employees. Barlow works with more than 30 types of businesses.
G&R Manufacturing Carlson Holds Inc. in Naugatuck is owned and operated by Jay Carlson. The company specializes in progressive die-stamping, fine blaking and assembly. It has increased sales by 27 percent over the previous year, diversifying product lines and creating additional skilled jobs.
