NEW HAVEN - Newton-Foster Homemaker, the Home Health Aide Agency and On Duty Management have joined forces to provide training classes for eight women learning to be home health aides. The three-week customized training program is funded by Empower New Haven, which seeks to match Empowerment Zone residents with training and employment opportunities. Empower New Haven, a non-profit organization, administers millions in federal funds and was able to cover approximately $1,075 per student for tuition.
Sherri Killins, president and CEO of Empower New Haven, says that customized training has been available since 2000 and 10 more slots are available for home health aide training through the Newton-Foster agency. Columbus Auto Body Works and Jarman's Restaurant have also used the program. Six workers were hired at Jarman's through the program.
