Housing Starts Down From Last Year

The state's Department of Economic & Community Development reports that Connecticut communities authorized 747 new housing units in October. For the year to date, permits are down 4.9 percent from a year ago, with 9,595 permits issued from January through October 1998 and 9,123 over the same period this year.
New Haven County municipalities authorized 139 units for the month. Hamden led all Connecticut communities with 37 units. Danbury followed with 31 and Groton with 16. Fairfield County documented the largest number of new, authorized units in October with 161. Hartford County came in second with 142.
At 42.9 percent, Windham County showed the greatest percentage increase in October compared to the same month a year ago. Middlesex County followed with a 5.7 increase.
