Six years ago Bonita Stringari drove across the United States looking for new and unusual work by artists and crafts people. The result of her journey was this distinctive gift shop on the Post Road in Fairfield, devoted to the work of American artisans.
For anyone on your gift list who has a fascination with Native American culture, this is the place to come. East of West has hundreds of items made by Native American artists, including real dream catchers, drums, pottery and exquisite silver jewelry. Stringari's selection is in fact better than that of the gift shops on many western Indian reservations. The workmanship is exquisite, and nothing is the least bit tawdry or trite.
The shop also has a wide range of items made by other American crafters and artists. There is an adorable collection of stuffed animal puppets for children, quite a number of striking colored glass pieces - vases, tree ornaments, bangle bracelets - and beautifully carved wooden walking sticks, children's toys and other items.
