First of all, leave us out of that whole Sally's-Pepe's-Modern hornet's nest of endless, pointless "best (a)pizza" debates (pointless, because all three serve heavenly fare). But if you're talking exclusivity, then Sally's has to take the cake. Unless you're smart, lucky or a Consiglio pal, getting into Sally's can be harder than getting into heaven. And nearly as rewarding, its adherents would argue.
The long-longer-longest lines at Sally's are based on: 1) the tiny size of its Wooster Street storefront; 2) the fact that, much like in the real world, all Sally's customers may be equal, but some are more equal than others; and 3) obviously, the to-die-for brick oven pies. (Our own recommendation: white clam with extra garlic.)
As Yogi Berra put it best: "Nobody goes there anymore - it's too crowded." But three generations of sore-heeled gourmands can't all be wrong. When you sink your teeth into that little slice of heaven, you'll know you've earned it.
