Going the Extra Mile for Employees

Going the Extra Mile for Employees

NEW HAVEN - During a time of ferocious competition for talented workers, some companies are trying new ways to attract and retain talented employees. A new program offered by Fitness Alliance of Berlin is also a novel marketing idea for the health clubs involved. The network of 63 health clubs across Connecticut helps employers offer exercise opportunities as a new benefit for employees. In addition to helping to attract and retain employees, the program is designed to help reduce health-care costs and lower absenteeism. To date, the Downtown Health & Racquet Club (DHRC) of New Haven is the only health club in New Haven to participate in the statewide network.

“Once you had to be fairly high up the corporate ladder to rate membership in a fitness center as a corporate benefit,” Downtown Health & Racquet Club general manager Don McManus says. “Through the Fitness Alliance, employers can afford to offer this benefit to all of their employees. That's a big change. It could have bottom-line benefits by helping workers better manage stress and avoid health problems that can arise from not exercising,” he adds.

Through the Fitness Alliance, a company can offer its employees the lowest rate currently available for a membership at a fitness club, along with a seven-day trial membership. The Fitness Alliance also helps employers promote fitness through the company newsletter, payroll envelope flyers and participation in health fairs.

For more information on this employee benefit program, visit the Downtown Health & Racquet Club in New Haven or call (203) 787-6501.
