NEW HAVEN - New Haven is preparing for a facelift. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the VA-HUD bill which includes funding for the nation's Empowerment Zones and Enterprise Communities. These funds will be used to implement resident-driven programs designed to revitalize neighborhoods. Under the legislation New Haven will receive approximately $3 million of Empowerment Zone funds.
Said Mayor John DeStefano Jr.: "This will help us continue to implement a wonderful, community-driven renewal plan that will reshape the face of the city for years to come, and restore hope and opportunity to our most economically-disadvantaged neighborhoods." New Haven's strategic plan will use millions of dollars in community investments from partners such as the state of Connecticut, Yale University, developers of the Long Wharf mall, local banks, the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Gateway Community-Technical College, the Regional Workforce Development Board, Rideworks, the Board of Education, the Housing Authority of New Haven, the police department, Livable City Initiative, the city Plan Department and others.
Combined with the new Empowerment Zone funds, these activities will help place 2,000 residents in jobs that will be created over the next several years through various economic development initiatives. The six New Haven neighborhoods included in the plan are Dixwell, Dwight, the Hill, Fair Haven, Newhallville and West Rock.
