I want to commend Fiona Phelan's factual, well-written article on the state of Connecticut's set-aside program ("Doing Business With the Government," October 4). The program is one of several Department of Administrative Services offerings that another person and I will be marketing to Connecticut's municipalities and school districts starting about November 1.
One of the programs that is almost ready to be deployed is our e-commerce initiative, which will make merchandise under state contracts available to municipalities and school districts over the Internet at no cost to the political subdivisions. The benefit to the business community that holds these contracts is that they are entering a market four times as big as the state alone without making a single additional sales call. We will perform this function for them. Of course, there is no free lunch. The vendors pay our e-commerce vendor two percent of sales for using the service.
Many of our vendors and about 70 municipalities, school districts and state agencies are ready to participate even before we launch our marketing campaign.
