| At Milford Hospital, women who need breast biopsies now have a minimally invasive alternative for detecting early-stage breast cancer. The stereotactic procedure, called a mammotome breast biopsy, provides an alternative to both open surgical breast biopsies, which require a large skin incision, and core needle biopsies, which involve multiple insertions of the sampling device. "Not only is this more comfortable for the woman, it also minimizes the removal of surrounding healthy tissue resulting in minimal scarring," explains Ilan Kinori, M.D., chairman of the diagnostic imaging department at Milford Hospital. Once the abnormal tissue is located using X-ray equipment, a thin, rotating probe is inserted into the breast one time in order to collect the sample tissue, which is then sent to the pathology lab for analysis.
