By: BNH
Genaissance Pharmaceuticals Inc. of New Haven has named Jurgen Drews, M.D., onetime president of global research and development for F. Hoffman-LaRoche Ltd., to chair its board of directors.

A Genaissance director since December, Drews is presently chairman of International Biomedicine Management Partners Inc., a venture investment firm.

A population genomics and informatics company, Genaissance develops and markets proprietary technologies that connect gene variability with drug response.

Regarded as pharmaceutical visionary who has authored close to 100 papers and several books on drug development and industry issues, Drews played a leading role in establishing Roche Bioscience and its acquisition of Genentech. As president of Roche global research and international R&D, Drews was responsible for directing a rich drug pipeline by fostering innovative methods of discovery and efficient systems of development.

"Dr. Drews is an industry sage who has been at the forefront of identifying and adopting new technologies, as reflected in his industry track record, thoughtful publications and investments in the industry's pioneering companies," said Genaissance CEO Gualberto Ruano, M.D. "He was among the first to understand the huge implications of genomics for pharmaceutical discovery. Drews' participation in our company's growth is an important endorsement of our gene-variation technology and strategy."

Added Drews: "The critical challenge for the pharmaceutical industry is to improve the pace of innovation and the productivity of research and development. Gene-variation technology is one emerging area with extraordinary potential to enhance drug discovery and development."
