Hamden Mart will be welcoming a new department store to take the place of the recently vacant space left by Steinbach's.
Bon-Ton is set to cut the ceremonial ribbon and open its doors to the public on Wednesday, September 22. There will be musical entertainment, clowns, cookware demonstrations, cosmetic makeovers and drawings for prizes valued at more than $6,500.
The Bon-Ton is a 100-year-old York, Pa.-based company which operates 70 stores and employs more than 8,500 workers. The store carries fashion designers such as Tommy Hillfiger, Estée Lauder and Liz Claiborne, in addition to its own private label brands.
Jan Ladnier, spokesperson for the Bon-Ton, says of the company's decision to site a store in Hamden Mart as opposed to downtown New Haven or the proposed Long Wharf Mall, "We felt this was the best opportunity for the store. Price and size of the space were definite deciding factors. Besides, the space used to be occupied by Steinbach's, which is also a department store."
Hamden Mart and Hamden Plaza have undergone some revamping, welcoming such stores as T.J. Maxx and Old Navy in recent months.
The Bon-Ton began as a one-room millinery store in downtown York, Pa. in 1898. Last year the company posted chain-wide sales of $675 million. In addition to Hamden, other New England stores opening in 1999 are in Burlington, Vt. and Concord, N.H.
The Bon-Ton will open its doors and commence normal business hours beginning September 22. Festivities will continue throughout the weekend, including a pianist performing on a baby grand piano, Peter Rabbit in the children's department and a strolling Dixieland trio.
