Business New Haven

We were pleased to read "Putting the Business Back in Business Education" (BNH, August 9), which echoed some of the themes we have emphasized since 1992, when the New Haven Public Education Fund (NHPEF) was asked to take over the School-Business Partnership program for the New Haven public schools. Our Partners in Education program has grown from 23 local businesses partners in 1992 to over 65 area businesses and organizations matched with 36 public schools in New Haven for a mutually beneficial relationship.
Your story emphasizes, as we do, that partnerships are not just about money. In fact, many partners are not-for-profit organizations. Both the Shubert Performing Arts Center and Yale-New Haven Hospital have won our Outstanding Partner of the Year award; the Shubert for its fine work with the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet School and Yale-New Haven for its fine work with Career High School, Sheriden Academy of Excellence, and several other public schools.
Many partners involve employees in tutoring, mentioning, participating in classroom learning or on the School Planning Management Team, as well as sponsoring special events and fundraising. The partnership benefits both the school and the company by improving community relations, enhancing community input in schools, educating future employees and consumers, and boosting employee morale.
Each spring we host a breakfast to honor the work of our Business Partners on behalf of our schools and invite principals to nominate their Business Partners for special recognition. Their stories are inspirational and would fill a book. There is no doubt about the worth of this program to many in our community.
In the coming year, the NHPEF will be surveying current partners to create a template for new businesses to follow in establishing a successful school partnership, and we will host three workshops for School-Business Partners to strengthen our partnerships. We invite all those interested in participating to call Linda Kosturko at 865-3255 for further information.
