HAMDEN - Save-A-Lot, a discount grocery, has opened in Hamden's lower Dixwell Avenue neighborhood. This is the fourth Connecticut location for the St. Louis chain. Other Connecticut locations include Meriden, New Britain and Hartford. According to Dan Kimack, a spokesperson for the company, the new store at 1125 Dixwell Avenue is about 13, 000 square feet and will employ approximately 25 people. Hamden' lower Dixwell business district has recently also become home to A.J. Wright, a discount clothing retailer, and a Walgreen's pharmacy.
Save-A-Lot targets typically underserved communities, serving a mix of urban and rural neighborhoods often overlooked by larger supermarkets. Because we have a smaller [size] it allows us to go into all kinds of neighborhoods, Kimack says. We carry a limited assortment of merchandise, reducing the store's cost of operation and allowing the chain to pass the savings to customers.
