Microsoft Billed a Buck

The six-week antitrust trial between Bristol Technology and Microsoft Corp. ended last month with a federal jury finding that Microsoft did not violate U.S. antitrust law in negotiating over Windows source code, as Bristol had alleged. The jury did find that Microsoft committed a deceptive act that violated the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act (CUPTA), but did not specify what that act was, and awarded Bristol $1 in damages. Company statements on the trial can be found at www.bristol.com and www.microsoft.com.

TPU Expands Online Offerings

At the end of its first year of offering a full schedule of online courses, Teikyo Post University in Waterbury is beginning several online degree programs. Students are now able to complete online all courses leading to an A.S. or B.S. in management; B.S. in integrated business with a concentration in law office management, management, marketing or management information systems (MIS); and a B.S. in management information systems (MIS). "A year ago, we took a bold step in offering an extensive series of online courses," explains Judith Slisz, dean of the division of accelerated degree programs, "to accommodate adult students whose work or travel schedule did not permit them to attend classroom courses in the evenings or on weekends on campus or at our branch campuses. The response to these courses has been so strong that we have expanded our offerings to include all the courses leading to a number of popular degrees for the adult student."

SEAS Receives Grants

The University of New Haven has received significant donations from two leading technology firms for computer workstations and software benefiting the university's School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS). These grants have an estimated commercial market value of several million dollars. Unigraphics Solutions of Middletown donated equipment software through a workstation site grant that will provide the university with a comprehensive list of computer-related equipment software, including 25 software packages that include industry-standard drafting software. The company will also provide personnel training in the licensed software. Integrated Systems Inc. has also donated software-engineering tools, including 20 software packages, technical support and upgrades for the equipment software as needed.

Companies Go For the Platinum

Gerber Technology and Protein Sciences have earned the "Platinum" award of the Connecticut Quality Improvement Award entry-level Connecticut Innovation Prize, beating out 80 other applicants. Gerber Technology's platinum application was for its 4-Hour Sample, a process developed to reduce the traditional weeks of preparing a sample for an apparel manufacturer. Protein Sciences, of Meriden, received the honor for development of a system employing dialysis to increase the efficiency of protein production in insect cells. Winning plaques will be distributed at the 12th annual CQIA Conference on Quality & Innovation, along with "1999 Connecticut Best Practices," containing this year's winning platinum, gold and silver CIP applications.

NVCTC Falls into the Gap

The Computer-Aided Drafting/Design (CADD) Department through the Engineering Technologies Divisions at Naugatuck Valley Community-Technical College (NVCTC) has incorporated SolidWorks Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software into advanced courses starting with the fall semester. SolidWorks is a computer-aided design system that allows designers to create three-dimensional solid models of products and make changes as design requirements evolve. Naugatuck Valley says that its reason for adopting the new software is the existence of a technology gap: while many companies are adopting this technology to become more competitive, there still remains a significant gap in the number of people trained to use the new software.

Tech Magic Cyber Camp Honored

The Tech Magic Cyber Camp program sponsored last summer by the New Haven Public Schools' School-to-Career Initiative and the Regional Workforce Development Board was recently honored by the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment & Training Administration (ETA). At a New England region-wide ceremony held at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., the Cyber Camp program was recognized as an exemplary youth program in the Integrated Youth Systems Services category by ETA Regional Administrator Robert J. Semier. The camp is a learning experience for summer campers ages five through eight as well as for their counselors, high school-aged youths hired through the Regional Workforce Development Board's summer youth employment program. Said Semier at the awards ceremony, "This program exemplifies how several agencies in a community can come together to collaborate on an innovative program which can provide a constructive and productive summer experience for young people at several age levels."
