Scanners

Griffin Hospital has expanded its services to include a third day for the mobile MRI service, weekend and evening hours for regular service, and upgraded MRI technology. The new MRI scanner is more powerful, precise and quiet, and its smaller design is ideal for patients who may experience anxiety or claustrophobia in a traditional MRI unit. The new scanner allows the patient's head to remain outside the unit, while producing higher resolution readings. The hospital has purchased three such scanners, as well as a new CAT scan machine.

Diagnostic Imaging of Milford has also expanded services with the opening of a new outpatient diagnostic facility at 30 Commerce Park. The site includes a mammography center with both screening and diagnostic equipment and a separate area specifically for women's mammography imaging. The new facility also includes a new spiral CT scan, new bone-density equipment and ultrasound, radiology and fluoroscopy equipment.

Research Grants Announced

The W.M. Keck Foundation has announced the first five grant recipients under its recently established "Distinguished Young Scholars in Medical Research" program. The Young Scholars program is a five-year, $25 million initiative, supporting research into the fundamental mechanisms of human disease by investigators who exhibit promise early in their careers. Each grant recipient's institution will receive an award of up to $1 million to support the scientist's research for a period of up to five years. Five additional investigators will be chosen in each of the next four years for a total of 25. Mark Gerstein of Yale University was one of this year's recipients. His work in building a library of protein folds aims to create a broader understanding of disease processes at the level of the entire organism, eventually aiding in the design and use of drug protocols aimed at ameliorating specific pathogens. For more information about the grants, visit the W.M. Keck Foundation's Web site at www.wmkeck.org.

Chime-Net Connects Health Care Institutions

Twenty of Connecticut's acute-care hospitals can now process Medicare Part A claims electronically over Chime-Net, a new centralized connection. These claims represent on average 50 to 60 percent of total revenues for Connecticut hospitals, revenues that will now be submitted, processed and authorized for payment via Chime-Net, an affiliate of the Connecticut Hospital Association. Chime-Net provides a connection between member institutions including acute-care hospitals, HMOs, insurance clearinghouses, nursing homes and home-care agencies and the Internet. Since its inception in 1993, Chime-Net has grown to include many such institutions, including 90 percent of the acute-care hospitals in the state.

Area Physicians Honored with Nomination

Three area physicians have been nominated for the Dr. Melville G. Magida Award: Lewis Berman, Susan Leib and Paul Quartararo. The Magida Award is presented annually by the Fairfield County Medical Association and the Richard & Hinda Rosenthal Foundation. Now in its 20th year, the award recognizes a young physician who has shown a notable capacity for patient treatment and care, and a special sensitivity to patient-physician relationships. Lewis Berman, M.D. is director of critical care medicine at Norwalk Hospital and assistant clinical professor of medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. He is a pulmonary disease and critical-care medicine specialist and was nominated by his professional colleagues at Norwalk Hospital. Susan M. Leib, M.D. is a pediatrician who was nominated for the award by her professional colleagues at Danbury Hospital. Leib is in private practice in Ridgefield. Paul Quartararo, M.D. specializes in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases and critical-care medicine. He was nominated by his professional colleagues at the Stamford Hospital. He is in private practice with the Stamford Medical Group, P.C. in Stamford.
