Connex on the Rise

Connex International, spurred by a 58-percent hike in sales between 1997 and '98, as well as 39.7-percent growth in conference calls, has tripled the size of its Danbury network services department, the second physical expansion of the company's headquarters location in one year. Over the last 18 months, the company has reinvested one-quarter of revenues in infrastructure improvements, increasing call capacity by 40 percent. Enhancements include an enlarged network services organization as its backbone, more flexible automated call registration, an improved billing system and better network backup. Connex also recently unveiled "Connex Presents," a new Internet service that enables organizations to host Web-based multimedia conferences.

CompuDyne Acquires 'Inmate Management' Technology

CompuDyne Corp. has announced the sale of its MicroAssembly Systems division to Penn Engineering & Manufacturing for $1.4 million. While the performance of MicroAssembly Systems, manufacturer of the Stick-Screw System for automation of small screw assembly in manufacturing environments, has been satisfactory, the CompuDyne says the business no longer fits with its business strategy of focusing on high-end physical and electronic security products and services. CompuDyne has completed the acquisition of the Corrections Information Systems division of BI Inc. Now named CorrLogic Inc., the business has developed a complete inmate-management software product, which is already installed or being installed in a number of corrections sites around the country. The purchase is a reaffirmation of CompuDyne's business strategy of having technology-based solutions in the corrections market. CompuDyne began trading on the NASDAQ national market June 10.

New Web Sites

The nation's oldest regional business organization, the New England Council, recently launched its first Web site. NEC President James T. Brett cited the importance of finding new ways to spread the group's message. The site, which can be accessed at www.newenglandcouncil.com, contains sections such as "Issues Agenda" and "Inside Washington."

The city of Meriden has likewise created its first Web page, joining other cities around the world that have gone online. The site, www.cityofmeriden.org, will feature a history of Meriden, where to go for a building permit, hours of the City Clerk's office and other useful information.

HB Communications introduced a Web site some time ago, but its navigation has recently been redesigned with the A/V customer in mind. It features information on where to find HB, from trade shows to seminars in the New England area, product information, a warehouse page to find demo and closeout equipment, and an on-line stock tape. Visit at www.hbcommunication.com to browse or order.

Basic (and Not-So-Basic) Training

"With just a click of the mouse, you can submit a training request form that will be distributed to Connecticut public and independent colleges and universities that can meet the training needs of businesses," says Weisberg Kaufman, vice president for education and training at the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA). Many of the state's two- and four-year colleges and universities will customize curricula and programs to meet a broad range of business needs. The necessary form is under the "Workforce Development: Business Training Opportunities with Higher Education" section of CBIA's Web site, www.cbia.com. CBIA will submit the form to colleges and universities, and the applicant will then receive a list of pertinent training options available. Lists of participating schools are available on the CBIA Web site, along with additional training information, such as how to access state training dollars, state and federal tax credits, help in recruiting new employees, and access to public and private training programs.

Allegra Offers Interactive Printing

Patricia and Steve Kasko, owners of Allegra Print & Imaging in New Haven, have installed the newest generation of file-transfer technology for the printing industry. This advanced electronic technology provides a direct on-line, interactive Web site where customers can download and receive private files efficiently and conveniently. The interactive Web site allows clients access to a personal password-protected folder from which they can send and retrieve files, update documents, proof artwork or documents and place orders. "By offering the interactive Web site to Allegra Print & Imaging clients, we believe we can provide better service, faster turnaround, and a better overall product to meet the time demands of today's business," says Pat Kasko.

SNET Aids Digitally Disadvantaged

SNET President and CEO Tom Morgan has announced that SNET will award $500,000 in grants to Connecticut's two- and four-year colleges, universities and technical schools to strengthen computer literacy statewide. The grants are intended to narrow the digital divide in Connecticut, the gap between information haves and have-nots. The SNET "Links to Learning - Closing the Digital Divide" grants will focus on reaching non-computer-literate adults, including small-business owners, the unemployed, retirees and any segment of the population that presently has limited access to training opportunities. The company also contributed $500,000 to the University of Connecticut to add a new professorship to the university's engineering program and a new program to encourage more high school students to pursue careers in communications technologies.
