NEW HAVEN - Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) is implementing new computer initiatives that aim to build a technology-driven environment centered on learning. These include the Student Technology Assistance Representatives (STARS) program, which provides participating students with hands-on training in new computer technologies, regardless of their academic discipline.
Combining university learning with IT proficiency, the STARS program offers participating students the opportunity to earn an IT certificate representing their four years of training - which may serve them well in the post-graduation job hunt.
This year, a dozen freshmen have been chosen to participate in the STARS program, believed to be the first of its kind in Connecticut. Each STARS student works with a member of the faculty or IT staff on a yearlong project to experiment with and apply computer technology. Students receive extensive training in the software tools used at the university, and during the summer, they apply their technological expertise in various internships supported by the program.
Information about STARS and other SCSU computer initiatives is available by calling 203-392-8758 or 203-392-6295.
