Good thinking in your award to [Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce President] Matthew Nemerson as the 1999 Citizen of the Year.
I remember Matt coming into the chamber presidency back in the 1980s. He should have been the Citizen then; it's a tough road in this chamber, and I don't know how he does it. But, in truth, his footprints are everywhere.
Having had the chance to work with him briefly in 1990 or so, I know how good and hard-working the guy is. He has both the intelligence and the tenacity to help deliver this region into the hands of 2000 A.D.
But as your own editorial in the January 25 issue laid it out: Where is the next generation of leaders? Or is one strong leader good enough? And where is that leader, now that the old kitchen cabinet of the DiLieto administration is out for renovations?
Back to Matthew: Yes, he makes a great pipefitter as a broadcaster. To those who may dig the WELI gig on Wednesday evenings, Nemerson and [BNH Editor] Michael Bingham resound like two Oxford dons at croquet. Their combined talents obviously are better served in politics and journalism, respectively.
Congratulations, Matthew. You did it the hard way.
