The next time you're traveling on I-95 as a passenger (not a driver), check out the state's latest foray into the technology arena: live webcams that allow civilian workers to monitor one of the 91 webcams along that road, mounted in inconspicuous locations on light poles.
The video generated by these cameras is also fed to the Internet so commuters or those simply planning a trip can see in real time what is happening on that road.
DOT Highway Operations Director William Stoeckert says the cameras operate 24/7 and are monitored by state employees and private contractors at the DOT's Newington headquarters and at a Bridgeport location.
It' part of a national program that's been ongoing for about ten years, Stoeckert explains, as well as a real boon to traffic management.
Stoeckert says the plan is to install another 100 cameras on poles on I-91 and I-84 in the Capitol region. There are currently two online in Hartford.
Each camera costs between $1,200 and $1,500, Stoeckert says, and after purchasing the cables, weatherproof enclosures and other items necessary for proper installation, it ends up costing about $4,000 per site.
One last note: Regardless of how you get to work and home again, or what level of interest you have in the state's transportation system, Transportation Strategy Board manager Robert Hammersley says the return of tolls is not something anyone has to worry about.
There is not a recommendation nor a suggestion to put tolls on any road in the state of Connecticut, Hammersley says.
