Broadway on
the Charles?

Business New Haven
2/8/1999
By: BNH

Yale University's real estate office has been talking with a Boston-based chain eatery about opening a location on Broadway. One problem, however, seems to be the name: the John Harvard Brew House. Talk about a Hobson's choice: unlimited beer, but with a name that's tough for just about any Yalie to swallow.
One way to make the deal go down more smoothly would be to have the chain operate a restaurant under a different name, said Jon Daigle, director of asset management for Yale properties, to the Yale Daily News. Although based in the Hub, the John Harvard Brew House has no official connection to the university named after John Harvard.
Even that concession, however, would not likely mollify many Yalies. Fulminated the Yalie daily in an editorial: Whatever the establishment's name, “We would still know, deep in our hearts, that it's Crimson to the core.”
And that would never do. “The [Yale] administration fails to grasp one fundamental tenet of our University,” the editorial concluded. “Princeton doesn't matter, but Harvard still sucks.”
One-Stop Shopping
for Investors
The U.S. Small Business Administration has selected Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) as the Connecticut base for ACE-NET, an online service designed to stimulate investment in growing small companies nationwide.
The Access to Capital Electronic Network provides information to institutional and individual accredited investors about small businesses seeking between $250,000 and $5 million in equity financing. ACE-NET allows potential investors - roughly 250,0000 individuals and institutions who annually invest upwards of $20 billion in some 30,000 ventures - to review the securities offerings of small companies over the Internet. Before ACE-NET there has been no centralized, nationwide listing service identifying smaller companies with dynamic growth potential.
As a regional operator, SCSU's ACE-NET operation will endeavor to help start and sustain new enterprises through capital, technology and training assistance. Particulars are available by calling 203-392-5881.

CBIA Eyes
Continued Reforms
Additional business tax reductions and a continuing phased drop in the corporate income tax rate top the list of steps the Connecticut Business & Industry Association (CBIA) says the state legislature should undertake in 1999 to make the state more competitive in national and global markets.
CBIA officials recommend keeping the growth in state spending below the inflation rate while improving the delivery of public services. This, they argue, can be achieved through innovations such as outsourcing functions such as the state's computer operations. The group also expresses concern about the level of state debt, and warn that new bonding for capital projects should be kept to a minimum.
CBIA President and CEO Kenneth O. Decko urges legislators “to continue building a business climate in Connecticut that will allow companies to be more cost-competitive, respond quickly to new worldwide opportunities and adapt to an ever-increasing rate of change.”
Movin' on Up
Allegra Print & Imaging in New Haven has upgraded its technological capabilities by added a new two-color printing press, which will make possible the creation of commercial quality communications materials such as brochures, booklets and annual reports. “Our service offerings continue to expand and reflect increasing client demand for more sophisticated printing capabilities and high-quality printing solutions,” says Patricia Kasko, who co-owns Allegra with her husband, Steve. The Chapel Street shop offers full-color printing, graphic design services and electronic publishing, digital color and high-speed copying and complete finishing services, as well as other capabilities.
