Yale scientists lag Harvard, Stanford (but beat MIT), says survey

Everyone talks a lot lately about the impact of scientific research at Yale University as a potential engine of economic growth in greater New Haven and Connecticut.

But how does Yale stack up against its peers nationwide in the quality of its scientific performance?

A just-released survey by the Philadelphia-based Institute for Scientific Information places Yale fourth among the nation's top research universities in its “citation impact,” measured by calculating the average number of times an institution's published research papers were cited by other scientists around the globe.

The ISI survey, covering the five year period from 1993 to 1997, spanned the biological, physical and social sciences.

The leading universities were ranked based on the number of times their citation impact placed them among the top ten in each of 21 scientific fields. The top showing belonged to Harvard, which appeared in 17 of the 21 rankings, followed by Stanford (13 top ten showings), the California Institute of Technology (11) and Yale and the University of Michigan, with nine each. Ties were broken based on which institution had a higher overall ranking within the top ten.

Yale's rankings in the nine fields in which it placed among the top ten? The university was second in law and psychology and psychiatry; fourth in immunology as well as economics and business; fifth in physics and chemistry; eighth in engineering and neuroscience; and tenth in mathematics.

“This ranking, unlike other measures of excellence that strongly favor institutions with large departments, assesses the impact per faculty member,” said Pierre Hohenberg, Yale's deputy provost for science and technology. “Yale's strong performance underscores the extent to which each member of Yale's faculty contributes to research and scholarship, thereby assuring that the majority of students will benefit from Yale's preeminence, not just a few who happen to come into contact with superstars.”
