Getting the Word Out About Business

Entrepreneurship the subject of
new scholarly journal

Two professors at Fairfield's Sacred Heart University (SHU) have founded a scholarly journal devoted to entrepreneurship. And, taking a cue from their subject matter, they hope to make their publication one of the most successful in its field.

Management professors Laurence M. Weinstein and Madan Annavarjula recently unveiled the inaugural edition of the New England Journal of Entrepreneurship, of which Weinstein is editor and Annavarjula assistant editor. And although the frequency is now only semi-annual, the pair have high hopes for the future. “Even though the name says New England,” says Weinstein, “we would like to go international.”

Already entries for the second edition, scheduled to be published next summer, have been submitted by scholars nationwide and as far afield as Finland and Australia. Submission deadline for Vol. I, No. 2 is January 15.

The publication is not the first of its kind for SHU's College of Business. A decade ago, an effort to establish the business school's reputation for academic excellence resulted in Vanguard, a periodical devoted mainly to small-business issues. With Weinstein as editor, Vanguard solicited articles nationwide.

Unlike Vanguard, NEJE is a “refereed” journal. All submissions are handed over to a review committee, which works with Weinstein and Annavarjula to select articles for publication. NEJE's target audience includes business-school deans, management professors and others interested in the study of management, including business leaders.

Presently NEJE is fully underwritten by SHU, although Weinstein and Annavarjula hope to make it self-sufficient through paid subscriptions and selling advertisements. The pair also aim to make it one of the top three entrepreneurship journals in the nation and to become highly selective with regard to submissions. Though they presently publish approximately half of submitted articles, Weinstein and Annavarjula would like to see that reduced to 15 percent. Weinstein says a successful journal could likewise be useful to SHU as it seeks accreditation by the American Assembly of Colleges and Schools of Business.

“There are several journals in the field that have a name,” Weinstein says. “In three to five years, if we continue to have articles submitted to us, I hope we also can say we have a very fine journal of entrepreneurship.”
