LOS ANGELES - Making the presentation at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, researchers from the New Haven-based Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ALXN) and the Yale University School of Medicine said that nerve cells from genetically altered pigs, when transplanted to rats, have allowed regeneration of spinal cords in those rats. According to the researchers, testing has begun on monkeys although they say it is premature to know if the procedure will be effective on humans. However, there is hope that the new technology may in the future bring some relief to spinal-cord injured patients.
