A Grocery Glossary

Grocery store: Any retail store that sells a line of dry grocery, canned goods or non-food items plus some perishable items.
Supermarket: A full-line, self-service grocery store with annual sales of $2 million or more.

Convenience store: Any compact, drive-to store that offers a limited inventory of high-convenience items. More than half also sell gasoline and some kind of fast food. Many are open 24 hours.
Independent: An operator of up to ten retail stores.

Chain: An operator of 11 or more retail stores.

Supercenters: A large food/drug store and mass merchandiser under one roof. Store offers a wide variety of food and non-food merchandise and averages more than 150,000 square feet. Typically, 40 percent of space is devoted to grocery items.

Warehouse store: Store than carries more than 1,500 items, primarily dry grocery, with some perishables. These stores tend to downplay frills and concentrate on price appeal.

Superstore: A supermarket with at least 30,000 square feet, doing $12 million or more annually in sales with special sections for non-food items and other specialty sections like pharmacies and bank branches.

Wholesale club: A membership retail/wholesale hybrid with varied selections and a limited variety of products in a warehouse atmosphere. These stores have 90,000 or more square feet and devote 60 to 70 percent of floor space to general merchandise and offer groceries in large or bulk sizes.
