NORTH HAVEN - Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Connecticut was honored at a national sales and marketing conference for its health plans which provide benefit coverage for federal employees, and was recognized for “Largest Open Season Net Gain” and “Largest Year Round Net Gain.” Anthem's Federal Employee Health Benefit Program added 1,158 new contracts over the past year and achieved 165 percent of its sales goal.

NEW HAVEN - The Hearing, Balance & Speech Center (HBS) was recently chosen as recipient of the 1998 Hot MedSite Award for overall site excellence. HBS was recognized as having an “exemplary” Internet Web site by MedSite Publishing. The site, according to the award, fulfills the informational needs of doctors, students, researchers and health professionals, as well as the general public. HBS is the largest private audiology practice in the Northeast. Its Web site can be accessed at www.hearingbalance.com.

NEW HAVEN - Yale-New Haven Health System has elected seven new board members: Charles E. Bradley, president of Stanwich Partners Inc.; Joseph R. Crespo, president and CEO of Connecticut Energy Corp.; Donald J. Kirk, chairman of Greenwich Health Care System Board of Trustees; Marvin K. Lender, vice chairman of M&M Investments; J. Patent For Narcotic Detox

TOLLAND - David Simon, founder and medical director of the Nutmeg Intensive Rehabilitation Center, has earned approval from the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office for a detoxification procedure called Intensive Narcotic Detoxification (IND). IND is used to help detoxify users of heroine, methadone and other opiate drugs. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and uses a drug called nalmefene, which speeds up the withdrawal process in the human body. Effectively, the patient sleeps through the withdrawal process, making it much easier to terminate the addiction. Seventy-five of IND patients say they have stayed opiate-free three months after undergoing the process. Heroin detox has been performed in Europe for more than ten years but is relatively new to the U.S.

Anthem Restructuring To Cost 90 Jobs Here

NORTH HAVEN - Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield has undertaken a restructuring. The plan involves a reduction of the 1999 operating budget and elimination of 90 positions by early September. Another element involves “flattening” administration so that each manager will have no fewer than seven and no more than 25 employees working for him or her. Anthem is offering a voluntary separation program to employees who will be downsized.

DMV Studies Accidents

HARTFORD - A study that documents motor vehicle accidents in Connecticut may help to lessen the number of accidents in the future and reduce health costs as well. This study is part of the Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) and is funded by the National Highway & Traffic Safety Administration. The information is gathered from several sources including the CHIME database, Connecticut Mortality Registry and the state's Department of Transportation. The study is divided into three separate reports: medical and financial results of injuries sustained in accidents, crashes involving elderly drivers and the outcomes of injuries depending on the type of object that was struck. Other pieces of information gathered included the number of years of life lost, certain diseases or conditions that existed before the accident and seriousness of injuries to internal organs.

Midstate Medical To Open

MERIDEN - On September 8, MidState Medical Center in Meriden will hold its grand opening ceremony. MidState is a replacement for the Veterans Memorial Medical Center and will house 94 private in-patient rooms. The facility cost $70 million to build, with funds coming mainly from the sale of tax-exempt corporate bonds issued by the state's Health & Education Facilities Authority. The 237,000-square-foot building will house state-of-the-art equipment and the most advanced accelerator for cancer treatment in the country.
