Business New Haven
8/10/98
By:
True Partnership

The Waterbury Adult Education Program would like to thank you for publishing the recent article, “Bridging the Gap,” by Susan Banfield, which appeared in Business New Haven on June 1. The article, which focuses on various training initiatives throughout the state, including those undertaken by the Waterbury Adult Education Technical Training Center, was greatly welcomed. Such coverage is invaluable in all our efforts to meet the skilled-labor needs of manufacturers.

However, in an effort to establish an accurate record, clarification is necessary regarding the highlighted quote by John Petro of Ville Swiss Automatics in Waterbury. The quote, which read, “This has been better for us than any state or Department of Labor Program,” is not an accurate account of our endeavor standing alone.

In fact, from its initial planning stage to date, the endeavor has been a product of an effective partnership among education, manufacturers and the Department of Labor. Inasmuch as all involved parties have made significant contributions to the success of the program, the support and enhancements provided by Connecticut's Department of Labor are vital.

Machines, tools, active advisory board roles, technical assistance in achieving apprenticeships and funding support are only some of the benefits which have been realized by the Department of Labor's concerns and involvement. We are especially grateful to William Bellotti, deputy labor commissioner, who has been involved in this project since its inception.

Documentation strongly supports the success as achieved by past Department of Labor programs, yet many of us in our enthusiastic assessment believe that this particular model may actually be more effective and successful than its predecessors.

In the final analysis, though, the success of the entire initiative is dependent on the continued support and commitment of the “partnership.” Connecticut's Department of Labor continues to support and commit to education and manufacturers for the good of the project.
