Jill Tuchmann, director of sales and marketing for Medwaste Management Inc. in Fair Haven, says her company's experience with the state's Department of Environmental Protection has not been at all difficult.
The company has been trying to get a permit to process biomedical waste at its River Street plant. Currently, the company only transports it from medical facilities throughout the state to disposal facilities in other states.
The proposal has met with vigorous opposition and at least four city aldermen have vocally opposed it.
The company's Fair Haven neighbors have testified at several public hearings and voiced concerns about everything from potential ground water pollution, spills, pollution from the chemicals used to sterilize the waste and increased traffic.
Of the permitting process, Tuchmann says the DEP has been extremely thorough and cautious.
These things take time, Tuchmann says, and the DEP is very detail-oriented. That's their job, and if you're doing the right thing, you won't have problems with them.
Additional hearings scheduled for June have been postponed until September 23 to allow the public additional time to view transcripts of earlier hearings.
