NEW HAVEN - By a vote of 491-331, employees at the Hospital of Saint Raphael rejected a proposal to unionize under the auspices of the New Haven-based Teamsters Local 443.
According to a hospital spokesman, the June vote included employees classified by the National Labor Relations Board as non-professional employees, which the hospital designates as employees in both clinical and non-clinical areas.
Local 443 already represents maintenance workers at the 511-bed hospital, founded in 1907 by the Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth. There are no other employees represented by unions, according to the spokesman.
Both hospital and union officials declined to comment further on the move to organize the workers or the vote because of a pending appeal.
