WATERBURY - Webster Financial Corp. (NASDAQ: WBST) has repurchased warrants for 600,000 shares of its own common stock from Fleet Financial Group. These warrants were previously issued as a result of the purchase by Webster of 20 branches of the former Shawmut Bank. Also, the Webster board of directors approved a repurchase program of 500,000 shares of commons stock, to take place over the remainder of 1998. Webster stock closed at 34 on June 26.
