I am writing in response to a story that appeared in your ALMANAC section on April 6 entitled, What's Hot, What's Not. The story stated that in 1998, 39 percent of Connecticut's business will be in the service sector, while only seven percent will be in the manufacturing sector.
While these figures correctly show the breakdown in the number of businesses in Connecticut, they do not tell the whole story. Manufacturing in Connecticut is alive and well. The seven percent of businesses that are defined as manufacturers actually employ more than 17 percent of Connecticut's workforce. Moreover, manufacturing produces almost all exports from Connecticut.
The number of available manufacturing jobs in the state is growing at a rate higher than the number of trained employees being readied to enter the workforce. In a recent survey conducted by the Manufacturing Alliance of Connecticut (MAC), it was discovered that employment in the manufacturing sector could increase by 4.41 percent, or 12,000 jobs, if the proper training programs existed to fill these openings with qualified employees.
In conclusion, while the number of manufacturing companies in Connecticut may be significantly fewer than the number of service companies, the impact that manufacturing has on Connecticut's economy is immeasurable. We at MAC look forward to an exciting future for manufacturing in Connecticut.
