Ambulance Dispatchers
May Be Liable

SHELTON - In a suit brought against Central Medical Emergency Dispatch Inc. and other defendants, Superior Court Judge Bruce M. Thompson of the Ansonia-Milford Judicial District ruled that private ambulance company dispatchers do not have liability immunity under the Good Samaritan statute. In his ruling Thompson drew a distinction between those who render “hands-on” emergency first aid and those who dispatch medical personnel to emergency situations. As a result of the ruling, ambulance dispatchers can be held fully liable if they are negligent in the course of their work.

Gaylord Endowment
Breaks $33 million

WALLINGFORD - Gaylord Hospital, a not-for-profit rehabilitation facility providing inpatient and outpatient services, reported a $13 million increase in the hospital's endowment over the past year. Gaylord's endowment dates back 94 years, and in recent years has benefited from the growth of the institution's investments and from continuing support from benefactors. Endowment funds have been directed to enhancing Gaylord's cancer rehabilitation program, expanding its library and resource center, and to supporting free memberships in its therapeutic water-exercise program.

Makes Honor Roll Elsewhere, Owes Millions Here

SHELTON - Physicians Health Services (PHS) announced its recent “superior” rating according to a Sachs/Scarborough health Plus market research survey. The research identifies PHS as the top health plan in the metro New York market, sharing the top rating with only ten other health plans nationwide. Sachs polled more than 97,000 consumers in 30 major markets to determine the winners. But a survey of its member physicians conducted by the Fairfield County Medical Association ranked PHS third on their list of “worst offenders” in remitting payments to physicians on a timely basis. Estimates extrapolated from the survey put PHS' outstanding balance with Connecticut physicians at $8.5 million.
