MIDDLEFIELD - Zygo Corp. (NASDAQ: ZIGO) and its founders have won two awards for technical excellence. The company received its fifth Photonics Circle of Excellence award for its MESA system. MESA expands on Zygo's strengths in measurement technology by allowing precise and rapid measurement of the surface shape of three-dimensional objects. Zygo's founders - Paul Forman, Sol Laufer and Carl Zanoni - also won the 1998 Edwin H. Land Medal from the Optical Society of America. The Land Medal is awarded for pioneering activity in the field of optics and image-manipulation.
MERIDEN - Yankee Energy System (NYSE: YES) also won recognition from the Connecticut Business & Industry Association. Its Yankee Gas subsidiary won an Environmental Success Award of Merit for its efforts to clean up and remodel a manufactured gas plant in Willimantic for community use. It also won honorable mention for its safety program which has relied on employing training to achieve a steady drop in accident rates.
