GREENWICH - At the recent National Design Show in Chicago, Howmet Corp. unveiled an engineering material with advanced properties that allows golf clubs to transfer energy into the ball at five times the rate of titanium, helping golfers achieve distances that are four- to seven-percent greater. Called Vitreloy, the new material is a bulk metallic glass alloy that was invented by scientists at Cal Tech and will be manufactured by ATI of Laguna Niguel, Calif. A leading manufacturer of precision castings, Howmet says it will explore other potential markets for Vitreloy besides sporting goods, including aerospace, energy and marine applications.
