Liberty, chamber team up to create Middlesex resource center

Connecticut has a new small-business resource center: This one at the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce in Middletown, established with a grant from Liberty Bank.
The Middletown-based mutual bank awarded $17,500 to get the new center off the ground. Liberty President and CEO Paul R. McConnell announcing the establishment of the center to an audience of some 300 April 13 at a Middlesex chamber breakfast.
“The Liberty Bank Small-Business Resource Center will provide the information and expertise that prospective business owners need to help them get started,” said McConnell. “They'll find complete resources to assist them in researching and developing a business plan: computer equipment, software, a video library, Internet access, reference books.”
McConnell explained that the original grant would fund the center for two years, and that the Liberty Bank Foundation would consider extending additional support at the completion of the program's first year.
The center will be a collaborative effort involving the Middlesex chamber, Liberty, the Connecticut Small Business Development Centers, Middlesex Community-Technical College, the Connecticut State University System and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). It will be staffed by chamber employees, assisted by commercial lenders from Liberty and representatives of the other participants.
Said Middlesex chamber President Larry McHugh: “This is an important step forward for business development in Middlesex County. By funding this resource center, Liberty has enabled the chamber to further its mission of support for new and growing businesses in our community, and this will benefit the entire county in our economic move forward.”
