Oil's Well That
Ends Well?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun a three-month cleanup of contaminated waste oil, wastewater and other dangerous chemicals at the National Oil Services site on the banks of New Haven Harbor in West Haven. From 1982 to 1994, National Oil Services operated a waste oil receiving facility on the western shore of the West River, where the company stored oils in above- and underground storage tanks. The site is now abandoned. The EPA is moving to remove oils and chemicals from the property to reduce the risk to an adjoining neighborhood and nearby grammar school. Cost of the cleanup is estimated to be $1 million.

Biomed Grows Big-Time

A new report card on the state's biomedical research industry shows a 12-percent increase in industry employment to more than 9,000 in 1997, as well as an 11-percent hike in research-and-development spending, to more than $1.8 billion dollars. The study, released last week by Connecticut United For Research Excellence (CURE) notes that the state's four pharmaceutical companies experienced the largest growth, with more than 500 jobs added and a total of $1.4 billion in research spending. The CURE report also notes, however, that a shortage of lab space endangers the growth of the biomed industry in the state.

Call 624-1493, ext. 210 for particulars.

The firm, which employs 200 workers, at one time manufactured whale bone corsets, and at the turn of the century employed as many as 2,000 workers. Strouse-Adler will be folded into Sara Lee's Playtex Apparel Division.

Alarmguard Holdings Inc. of Orange has signed a $26.5 million agreement to purchase the Massachusetts-based Sentry Protective Systems. 'Soft' Money?

The arts are big business in Connecticut. At least, that's what the Connecticut Commission on the Arts says. The group reports that the arts provide more than 30,000 jobs statewide and generate a total economic impact of $1.36 billion annually. In the Third Congressional District, cultural organizations spend about $108 million a year, and generate a total income of $106.5 million from 5.2 million admissions to museums, theaters, concert halls and galleries.

Heart to Heart

The Yale Cardiology Network and CardioNet of Connecticut, LLC have consolidated into a single statewide entity. The network, said to be the first of its kind in the state, will operate under the name Yale Cardiology Network. More than 90 university- and community-based physicians, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons are members of the group, which has locations throughout the state. The network is actively seeking contracts with HMOs and insurers to provide cardiovascular care to enrolled populations.
