Flexi Goes Public

SHELTON - Only three years after introducing its first product, FlexiInternational Software Inc., announced in December an initial public offering of three million shares of common stock. Chosen by Software Magazine as one of the industry's top ten innovators, the company achieved sales revenues of $8.3 million in 1997 by marketing an array of financial and accounting software applications that include FlexiFinancials, FlexiInfoSuite and FlexiTools. Flexi's stock will trade on the NASDAQ National Market under the symbol FLXI.

Celebrities Choose Local Webmasters

WALLINGFORD - Innovative Internet Marketing Solutions was selected to launch a Web site for the Official Fan Club of pop musician Michael Bolton, who grew up in the New Haven area. The site, which can be accessed at www.michaelbolton-fanclub.com, allows cyber visitors to order discounted concert tickets, participate in monthly contests, and contribute to charities that Bolton supports, including One To One, a mentoring program. The site is sponsored by Fan Emporium Inc., of Branford, which also houses the fan clubs for Carly Simon, Mariah Carey and the Cranberries.

Multimedia Firm Gains National Recognition

NEW HAVEN - Bryce & Associates Multimedia was recently named among the top 100 multimedia producers nationwide by AV Video & Multimedia Producer magazine. Located in Science Park, the company is the only African-American-owned firm to win the honor and was nominated by SNET after developing an interactive customer-training tutorial for SNET's CentraLink phone system. To increase minority representation in the industry, the two brothers who own the company, David and Sherman Bryce, offer apprenticeships in graphic design, multimedia and video production in cooperation with the Regional Workforce Development Board's School-to-Career program.

Amphenol's Sales Remain Strong

WALLINGFORD - A leading provider of interconnect products to the telecommunications, electronics and aerospace industries, Amphenol Corp. reported sales revenues of nearly $900 million for 1997, a 17-percent jump over the previous year on a constant-dollar basis, and earnings of $1.85 per share before extraordinary charges. In the fourth quarter, the company experienced double-digit sales increases in all its major connector markets, including North America, Europe and the Far East, and a five-percent increase in the sale of coaxial cables for cable television. During 1997, Amphenol completed a merger with an affiliate of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. and purchased the equipment, inventory and intellectual property associated with the “Matrix” line of cylindrical pin-and-socket connectors.

Enhancing Connecticut's High-Tech Image

To promote Connecticut as an ideal location for high-tech businesses, the Connecticut Economic Resource Center (CERC) has launched a $600,000 multimedia campaign nationwide that will focus on the quality of Connecticut's resources and what it can offer technology companies (see story, page 1). The first phase of the campaign will include advertising in magazines targeted at some of the state's key growth industries, such as photonics, software and biotechnology, as well as ads in regional business publications and a public relations effort designed to generate media coverage of the state's more successful high-tech firms.

“This is the first time we've done what you'd call an image campaign,” says Tom Bradley, CERC's director of marketing. “We have a strong story to tell, but we haven't really promoted it.” The campaign follows on the heels of a market study showing that, although Connecticut ranks first among states in the percentage its workforce employed in technology, few business leaders view the state as a technology center.

The campaign is being funded by a partnership that includes CERC, the Connecticut Department of Economic & Community Development, private industry through the Connecticut Technology Council, state public colleges and universities, and the Connecticut Conference of Independent Colleges.
