Lieberman Addresses Technology Leaders

Business New Haven
1/12/1998
By: BNH

WEST HAVEN - Pledging to continue his campaign to “articulate the full measure of the contribution that R&D makes to our society,” U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman said, in an address on December 15 to members of the Connecticut Technology Council, that he will sponsor a bill in the Senate that will double federal R&D spending over the next decade. Lieberman said that the federal government recently “has not been as good a partner as it has in the past” in advancing technological innovation, but that his bill would restore public investment in research as a top national priority.

Second Patent for
Vibra-Metrics

HAMDEN - Designed to help employers avoid catastrophic shutdowns and unscheduled production loss, the Sensor Highway system developed by Vibra-Metrics Inc., was recently granted a second U.S. patent. The system, now in use at facilities run by Commonwealth Edison and U.S. Gypsum, employs distributed address logic to centrally monitor data from vibration, temperature and other critical sensors located throughout an industrial site. In 1986, Vibra-Metrics was the first company to patent a bridge structural monitoring system, which it developed in collaboration with University of Connecticut professor John DeWolf.

New Phone for
Small Businesses

SHELTON - Nitsuko America has developed a new phone for small and home-based businesses that is now being field-tested and will soon be available for general distribution. Incorporating several features from Nitsuko's successful Portrait 824 system (including caller ID, NVM-series voice-mail integration and Centrex), the new Portrait 308 can expand to a maximum configuration of three lines by eight stations and is supported by one central wall-mounted KSU.

$12 a month. Users access the National Direct Yellow Pages on the Web at http://www.ndiyp.com. To register your company, call 800-342-0701, ext. 1, or fax to 203-466-3838.

How Companies
Are Using the Web

In the first survey of its kind, Akces Media of Bethel polled 830 companies with more than 50 employees in New Haven and Hartford counties to examine how they're using the Web. Their main findings: Though the majority of companies maintain a Web site, most use it for advertising purposes only. Less than one percent operate sites that allow customers to order products or services directly,
and only 0.5 percent offer any on-line customer service.

The survey found no major differences in Web usage among companies in manufacturing, service and finance. “If other data sources are correct and the projected Internet direct sales volume exceeds $2 billion by 1998, then we believe that our regional business community needs to play catch-up,” says Akces President Drew Henderson. The survey showed that only three of the companies surveyed in the two counties sell directly over the Web: Timex, the Meriden Record-Journal
and Perrier.
