Waterbury, Waterbury Everywhere
With regard to your November 3 story on new hotels and hotel expansions throughout the region:
Has anyone taken the trouble to explore why the city of Waterbury, which is notably smaller than New Haven and is certainly less renowned, is able to support two major chain hotels, namely the Marriott and the Sheraton [Four Points], while New Haven appears to be pulling teeth just to get its Omni Hotel to open downtown?
Isn't this the same hotel whose developer promised to have it open in time for the Special Olympics World Games?
It's almost 1998 and, as far as I have seen, no opening date for the New Haven Omni has been announced. And, by the way, the Special Olympics were in 1995. What's up with that?
- Francis O'Connor Hamden
The editor replies: In a story beginning on page 6 of this edition, we report that the Omni plans a so-called soft opening in January 1998, to be followed by a proper grand opening in March.
Correction
Due to a reporting error, an October 20 list of Connecticut HMOs attributed not-for-profit status to Aetna Health Plans of Southern New England Inc., based in Middletown, and Oxford Health Plans of Norwalk. Both are for-profit entities.
