NEW HAVEN - Alexion Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ALXN) reported positive results from preliminary testing of its new drug, 5G1.1-SC, aimed at patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. The drug caused no increase in adverse events and had what the company termed a potent anti-inflammatory effect. Leonard Bell, president and CEO of Alexion, suggests that the company's class of C5 inhibitors such as 5G1.1-SC may prove helpful in treating a variety of cardiovascular and autoimmune disorders, including heart attacks, lupus and arthritis, in which inflammation is a key disease mechanism.
