New Mandates for Health Insurers

HARTFORD - The General Assembly has passed a series of new mandated benefits that all health insurers in the state must offer. These benefits took effect on October 1 or upon renewal of a member's contract. Below is a summary:
• Hearing aids for children age 12 and under will be covered as durable medical equipment under policies, up to $1,000 per child within a two-year period.
• Colorectal screenings will be covered in accordance with recommendations established by the American Cancer Society.
• One mammogram will be covered every year for women age 40 and older.
• Pap smears for women must be covered.
• Mandated coverage for all medications considered to be psychotropic drugs. Coverage is subject to utilization management, as well as co-payment amounts.
