Connecticut exports to foreign markets grew by nearly $500 million in the first half of 1997 over the same period the previous year - a 14.3-percent hike, according to new figures from the state's Department of Economic & Community Development. That rate of growth outpaced all New England states save Vermont, and outstripped the U.S. export growth rate of 9.6 percent for the period. The uptick was fueled by $300 million growth in exports of transportation equipment, by $90.5 million in instruments and related products, and $85.4 million in primary metal industries. Among top-ten industries, the single largest gain over the first half of 1996 was in apparel, exports of which increased 119.8 percent. Canada continued to be the Nutmeg State's most active trade partner.
