New Haven City Hall was to begin a facelift this month to prevent permanent damage to the 1862 edifice. The city was preparing to begin mid-September work to restore the masonry facade, made of alternating bands of Connecticut brownstone and Nova Scotia sandstone. The city has allotted $2.4 million in capital funds for the work, augmented by a much smaller sum of federal money. New Haven's F.J. Dahill Co. Inc. will perform the work. The most extensive renovation to the Henry Austin-designed landmark began in 1987; the building was rededicated by then-incoming Mayor John DeStefano Jr. in 1994. All entrances to City Hall will remain open during the construction.
