New Haven's Long Wharf Theatre (LWT) has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven to revitalize and expand. According to foundation chairwoman Mary L. Pepe, the grant was intended as a financial linchpin to help leverage additional funding to refurbish the lobby, update sound and lighting systems and reopen Long Wharf's Stage II theater. Last year, as part of a public-private partnership, the foundation awarded an identical sum to the Shubert Performing Arts Center. The Tony Award-winning LWT is entering its 33rd season under the leadership of new Artistic Director Douglas Hughes. More than 20 productions originating at the theater have transferred to Broadway and off-Broadway.
